The peaceful transition in 1989 from State Communism to Democracy in East Germany has taken the world by surprise. The contrast with the violence that followed the French Revolution in 1789 is striking. How can we explain this contrast? And how was the rest of Europe affected by this peaceful change in regime in East Germany?
