Workshop: Science, Nature, and Technology in Western Fiction and Aesthetics

Chairs: Ingrid Makus and Douglas Moggach

This panel solicits papers which explores how Western narratives, in the form of poetry, plays and novels, and also in aesthetics, depict aspects of the human relationship to science, nature, and technology.  The theme of the panel is the development  of  Western thought about  this interaction,  beginning with the ideas  portrayed in  classical Greek  tragedy, moving through to  medieval epics and the modern eighteenth  century novel, and continuing to contemporary fiction that aims to challenge the structure and form of  Western narrative.  Reflections on this nteraction in aesthetics will also be examined.
