and Fiction: Products of Inventiveness
Chair: Mildred
Schachinger
Thought may serve to solve a problem or to invent a
story. In the first instance it constitutes science; in the second,
literary fiction. Thought, however, encompasses both and unites them
within one human body. At the same time, they are different, in that
science usually attempts to solve a problem, either actual or potential.
It is concerned with the actual here and now and calls upon the intellect for
assistance In the case of fiction it is social relationships involving emotions
and imagination which are the concerns.
The two are diverse but also united in one physical body
and their boundaries are not rigid. Nevertheless, differences between
them are noted and appreciated. At times in history, however, an
imbalance may insert itself which requires time's healing passage to correct.
